The Back-to-School Drive
Building a path out of poverty
At retail, a backpack with STEAM supplies can range from $50 (Elementary) to $95 (High School) dollars. Unfortunately, children living in poverty start their school year at a large disadvantage. Without crucial school supplies, these students cannot fully participate in classroom activities or complete their homework. The Family Giving Tree’s annual Back-to-School Drive was launched in 1995 with the goal of closing the educational gap for in-need K-12 students. Each summer, over 400 corporate and community Drive Leaders collect new backpacks full of essential, grade-appropriate school supplies for Bay Area students. In 2016 alone, 39,273 backpacks were distributed through 306 partner schools and agencies.
Did you know: To be eligible for our Back-to-School program, a child’s family income must fall below the federal poverty guidelines: $24,600 for a family of four in 2017 (Department of Health and Human Services).
