It’s been a tough year for all students. It has been especially tough on those students that Family Giving Tree annually supports. Like healthcare and food provision, education is essential to our community. School closures magnify socioeconomic, racial, and other inequities among students, especially those from financially challenged families. Many such families have guardians who are essential workers who may be less able to provide instructional support or have the financial ability to provide access to technologies that facilitate distance learning. We want to make sure these students have a better year for the upcoming school year than last year. We want to provide them with precisely what they need for the best comeback ever.

The 2021 Back-to-School Drive seeks to provide tens of thousands of backpacks filled with essential school supplies and supplies that aid in STEAM learning to this particular sub-set of students whose families struggle to afford these items. Students will also receive an Essential Health Kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, hand sanitizer, and a face mask. Students in grades K – 12 who qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National Free or Reduced-Price Meal Program are eligible to receive a backpack and supplies, equating to over 330,000 Bay Area children. Due to the pandemic, this number could now be much higher.
