As the teachers called out her classmates' names, friends around her jumped up with excitement to receive their gift. All the while, she sat nervously, fiddling with her hands, looking straight ahead. While I was taking pictures of everyone else, I couldn't help but notice how composed she remained, even though I felt she was starting to believe there wasn't a gift for her. It broke my heart to watch her wait. When the teacher finally pulled out one of the last gifts (it was a skateboard with a helmet--so cool!) and called her name, she smiled bigger and brighter than any other kid in the room. She went from being timid and shy, to proudly holding her skateboard and talking with peers. She even told me that she already knows how to ride a skateboard and is so excited to have her own. I never would have guessed it!
