Black History Month Agency Spotlight: A Brighter Day Youth

At Family Giving Tree, we will spend Black History Month spotlighting some amazing Black/African American-led organizations that we work with throughout the year. We hope you enjoy getting to know a few of our partner agencies better and celebrating their leadership along with us!

Pastor Kelvin Smith and Sherrie Smith have been long-time friends with Family Giving Tree. As an agency partner of nearly 20 years, we have worked together with these strong and loving community leaders to provide over 1,600 gifts to the Peninsula and South Bay communities.

Through A Brighter Day Youth, Pastor Kelvin and Sherrie focus on youth who are/have been in the juvenile/probation system to ensure they have the resources and support they need for positive life change through work training, building self-esteem, and life/social skill-building. Through mentorship, development, and fun outings, the organization keeps them engaged in productive activities to lessen the opportunity for the youths to fall victim to crime or recidivism.

We want to hold them, know their stories, provide extra support and keep them moving forward on goals, dreams, and plan.

…Kelvin and Sherrie are genuine people that really sincerely want to help communities of color and they’re making an impact in the community… I’ve seen him on the streets, I’ve seen him work with kids, I’ve seen him in the jailhouse and he’s changed and impacted lives where the trajectory is much, much better for those youths and actually adults as well.

…  there are a lot of people out there that help you because it’s their job, and Pastor Kelvin was just willing to help me because that’s what he wanted to do.

-Elvina, A Brighter Day Youth Program Award Recipient

These two Black community leaders are pivotal changemakers who have helped so many young members of the Bay Area community walk the path of personal and professional betterment and we are thrilled to highlight and celebrate them.
